One of my favourite past times is to go to the websites of car makers from other countri-ah fuck it.

This is part 2! Read part 1 here:

Awwww. So cuuute.

We start off with quite the curiosity. This Chevrolet Damas is actually a Suzuki Carry Kei truck, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . The Carry as a whole might be the most rebadged model name in the world. With the original Carry introduced in 1985, this is by far the oldest vehicle Chevy sells. Yes even older than the Express. Only sold in Uzbeckistan, which amusingly it’s webpage has pictures of it with Daewoo badges.

The original Lova was what they called the Aveo in China. Although they killed it in China in 2010 (of course as you know, the Aveo still lives elsewhere), 6 years later, GM China must have went, “you know that city car we stopped selling ages ago? Why don’t we name our new people carrier after that! Genius!”

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

The Spin is Chevy’s small MPV for emerging markets, and the closest thing they have to a minivan these days. And it wouldn’t be complete without a version with plastic surgery!

Shoulda been a 3 door

So GM and (Lada) partnered to make this, to make a sort of replacement to the Lada Niva, but under the Chevrolet brand , not a Lada for whatever reason. And than, because they’re using the Niva name for this, Lada can no longer use the Niva name on the actual Niva. Now it’s called the generic !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Why Chevy? Why backstab Lada like that? It’s no longer sold in Russia, but interestingly you can still get in a few Eastern European countries. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

The crossovers will kill us all! Elsewhere this is known as the Chevy Tracker, which was a version of the Suzuki Vitara. Speaking of Suzukis....

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Dafuq? Isn’t that a Suzuki? Why yes, in Ecuador, Chevrolet sell two Suzukis as Chevrolets. Despite GMs love of badge engineering, they couldn’t even be bothered to replace the Suzuki logos, or the Suzuki script on the tailgate. Suzukis aren’t sold in Ecuador, but I don’t think Chevrolet were in desperate need for more SUVs.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Do Ecuadorians just not think, hmm, I thought I bought a Chevy? I went down to the Chevy dealer. What’s this logo? A special model badge like the Corvette? What does this Suzuki word on the back mean? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Dodge did a very similar thing with !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Doesn’t make it any less lazy.

Captiva

Kinja'd!!!

Remember the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ? Well a new version was just unveiled as a rebadge of the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , a generic Chinese SUV. The original was turned into a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and looks like this will continue the tradition of having a bajillion other rebadges, with Wuling and MG versions already earmarked.

The Orlando was this Korean built MPV with SUV styling, that was very recently killed. But it’s been reborn as a “proper” SUV for China.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

GODDAMN YOU CHEVY. YOU COULD HAVE PICKED ANY OTHER NAME, BUT YOU BLESS THE AMAZING BLAZER NAME ON A LEXUS KNOCKOFF!

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Ironically, the Trailblazer is an excellent example of nameplate revival, keeping the ethos of a small-ish body on frame SUV. It’s basically a Colorado SUV, the same way a Tahoe is basically a Silverado SUV. Even then, it’s a heavily re-engineered Isuzu MU-X.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

There’s something about the proportions of this that seems quite of, like it’s trying to be curvy and sleek but it just can’t conceal the large nature of what it is.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

This is what Americans call a medium size SUV? There’s something about these photos that make the Traverse look very exaggerated. Those wheel wells look like they fill up half of the cars profile.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

As someone who lives in the UK, absolutely massive vehicles like the Suburban siblings are my guilty pleasure. Why isn’t this called the Suburban Sport or something?

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

I just can’t fathom how long that boot is, even with the third row up. They’re also the last 9-seater non vans left on sale in the entire world.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Yes it can carry tons of cardboard

Wow, what a sudden change in size. This is the pickup version of the Damas, you know, the tiny Suzuki kei truck. The final Uzbeckistan exclusive.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Ah one of the last surviving car based pickups- !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! A very endangered breed. Called the Tornado in Mexico, because Pontiac.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

This is going to get confusing. So there’s this pickup called the Isuzu D-Max. GM has a partnership with Isuzu so it was a good idea to re-engineer it as a Chevy. The thing is they developed three separate models out of it, that are extremely similar but they all have differences, mostly in the styling and interiors. The Colorado is designed for the North American market. A bigger grille, and a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to make it more a Chevy than an Isuzu.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

The Colorado must have been too American so for everywhere else the D-Max was developed into this, reusing the old S10 nameplate. It’s actually a Holden Colorado. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . As you can see it too got a redesigned interior to look more GM, but it’s different from the US version for whatever reason. Another difference is you can get it in a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . To make it even more confusing, it’s called the Colorado in Asia, even though the actual Colorado is a separate thing.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

And there’s the Chevrolet D-Max, which is just a straight rebadge of the Isuzu. They couldn’t even bother changing the name. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Only sold in Chile and Colombia for some reason. Why don’t they get the S10? Who knows.

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

The Silverado, America’s second favourite pickup. And the base model of this new version looks !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

But they’re keeping the old model until sometime next year, newly christened as the Silverado LD (for Light Duty? It’s not like it got any weaker).

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

This is the fifth time I puked looking at this truck, do I have to look at it again?

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

They’ve finally got around to replacing the Kodiak with this, the Silverado 4500, 5500 and 6500.

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Comes in N300 Max (cargo van), N300 Move (passenger van) and N300 Work (pickup)

This tiny van is actually a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , yet another Chinese GM owned brand. Intrestingly, the webpage on Chevrolet Egypt calls it “Best pickup in Egypt”. They don’t sell the pickup version in Egypt...

!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!

Kinja'd!!!

With all these super old cars and dead platforms in these emerging markets, It’s surprising, or perhaps unsurprising, that the Express is one of the oldest. When are they going to develop a new one? Also in Isreal this is called the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . As in the GMC, but a Chevy. Why?

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Oh dear. GM and Isuzu’s partnership have led to them rebadging Isuzu trucks for !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for quite a while, leading to this quick graph I made of all the models.

Kinja'd!!!

These trucks are all compiled from 3 different lineups to make one large lineup.

I’ve already spent enough headache on this series, I’m not going to spend several hours trying to decode what these letters mean and the differences between them. But it helps they keep the same model names as their Isuzu counterparts. I’m sure there’s a decoder somewhere.

Kinja'd!!!

But wait there’s more! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for some reason sells the older versions of the NKR. NPR and NQR, plus a regular more modern model called just the NP, which is probably just another name for one of the trucks above. But which one? The entire range is called the N-Series, and yet all their models have a Jumbo prefix.

Kinja'd!!!

But wait there’s even more! Chvey introduced these to the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in 2015, but went with a completely different naming route. While the naming scheme of 3500, 4500, 5500 and 6500 is much easier to understand, I have no idea if they’re different models or not from the ones they sell in Latin America. They all look the same!

!!! UNSUPPORTED LINE BREAK IN HEADER !!!

Kinja'd!!!

In Colombia, you can buy the chassis of the NPR, NKR, NQR and the FRR to create your own coach, plus a chassis called the Serie LV? In Ecuador, you can only buy an MT1 bus chassis? What is that? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Recently Departed

Kinja'd!!!

The lengths I had to go through to get good photos of these two...

Our friends at Chevrolet Uzbekistan had more where that came from. This July, they’ve stopped production of the 1st gen Daewoo Matiz. Until recently Chevrolet were selling 4 generations of the same Matiz! (OK, not really as the Matiz slowly assimilated into the Chevy Spark, but still.) Even more impressive that until 2017, they were still selling the last gen Pontiac LeMans! (which was really a Daewoo).

Kinja'd!!!

Maybe not the best picture to show it but the Enjoy is one of the narrowest looking people carriers I have ever seen. It’s hard to imagine it can seat 8.

Kinja'd!!!

Chevrolet stopped operating in India in 2017, which means losing two people carriers, the Enjoy, a rebadged Wuling Hong Guang, and the Tavera, an Isuzu built SUV that had been on sale since 1998. Oh and while we’re on the subject of Chevy vans, they’ve also killed the City Express, their rebadged Nissan NV200. Chevy hasn’t even given the proper Express a refresh throughout the entire lifespan of the City Express.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m not still salty! The SS needs no explanation, but the other Holden, the Caprice, was sold as a Chevy in the Middle East. Americans could only get the Caprice as an ex-cop car.

And yeah, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , Um, I didn’t remove them from the list as they’re technically offered by Chevrolet.

“Than why did you include upcoming models?”

Because.... ummm .... I ... dunno. I think I just liked this list to be as large as possible.

Anyways, so that’s all the Chevrolet’s I could find. For this clusterfuck I had to look up !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and compiled it into an Excel document, and it wasn’t helpful when they were advertising the new 2016 Chevrolet Impala. Does that mean they still sell it or not? Who knows! I took some liberties. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Although I did compile this spreadsheet a couple months ago, so some models may be removed from certain countries lineups since? Hey I’m not going to check them all again. I’m gonna do a manufacture with a much smaller lineup next time.

I like the look of the Niva. In 1998 I’d have had one over a CR-V or Rav4. Stylish body E cotec engine, proven 4wd system. There’s lots to like . Unfortunately RUSSIA of all coun tries gave it a zero star safety rating.

And there’s the Chevrolet D-Max, which is just a straight rebadge of the Isuzu. They couldn’t even bother changing the name. Isuzu interior, Chevy interior. Only sold in Chile and Colombia for some reason. Why don’t they get the S10? Who knows.

At least in Chile the D-Max has a long history going way back to the older Chevrolet LUV’s   as it was assembled here from 1982 until 2005, later replaced by the D-Max until 2008 when the plant closed (it was the last car manufacturing plant left in the country ), form 2008 it’s imported from Thailand (I think) and even though they also imported the US- made Colorado and now the Brazili an made S10 (rebadged as Colorado), the D-Max has always been the reliable Chevy work truck... Mostly because it’s an Isuzu and not a Chevy at all.

Fun fact: the Isuzu low cab for ward trucks are still assembled in Chile from knock-down kits although in a different plant from the one that was closed.
